Biographic Sketch

Dr. Govind Singh has a multifaceted and dynamic persona and is working towards finding solutions to various environmental issues & challenges and for promoting sustainable and inclusive development. He pursues a self-driven life mandate of enhancing and accelerating nation building with respect to his motherland India while also working for world peace and global sustainability.

Dr. Govind Singh is currently associated with the Indraprastha College (IP College) for Women, University of Delhi as Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies. At IP College, Dr. Singh engages the students from all disciplines for a Semester long Compulsory Course on Environmental Studies. Prior to this, Dr. Govind Singh was working at the Cluster Innovation Centre in the University of Delhi (CIC, DU) in a similar capacity. At the Cluster Innovation Centre, Dr. Singh taught Environmental Management to bright, young students while also mentoring many of them on various innovative projects in the field of environment, technology and development.

Dr. Govind Singh is the Co-founder of Delhi Greens, a Delhi based Non-Governmental Organisation set up in 2008 with the vision of ensuring environmental harmony and sustainable development. He has served as the Director of Delhi Greens organisation and is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Delhi Greens Blog, an award winning green media initiative for environmental protection through the use Information Communications Technology. Dr. Singh has also played an instrumental role in initiating the youth climate movement in the country and has successfully organised three Summits (May 2008, June 2010, August 2013) in the series of the Delhi Youth Summit on Climate (DYSoC) – a pioneering initiative patronized by the Department of Environment, Government of NCT of Delhi.

Among several interesting and innovative projects, the conceptualisation and successful execution of the first-of-its-kind ‘Urban Ecotour’ project in Delhi, supported by the Department of Environment, Government of NCT of Delhi, is very noteworthy. The ‘Urban Ecotour’ seeks to explore the natural heritage of Delhi and re-connect the citizens of Delhi to the very ecosystem that supports them. The ‘Urban Ecotour’ project also highlights lesser-known sites of ecological significance in the NCT of Delhi thereby ensuring their timely protection.

Dr. Govind Singh is also a Climate Project presenter and has considerable experience in calling for local as well as global action for environmental protection and climate change mitigation. Some other abilities of Dr. Singh include providing strategic consultation on urban sustainability projects, mass-media mobilization on environmental issues, web handling and brand development.

Dr. Govind Singh has a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Studies from the Department of Environmental Studies, University of Delhi. His research broadly focused on the inter-disciplinary subject of Urban Water Management in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, India. He has developed an in-depth understanding of the environmental history of Delhi and is now focusing on the urban metabolism of River Yamuna, optimizing the ecological footprint of NCT and more comprehensive urban planning of the ‘Delhi conurbation’.

Prior to his Ph.D., Dr. Singh received his Master in Science degree (Environmental Studies) from the School of Environmental Studies, University of Delhi. He is from the first batch of the innovative M.A./M.Sc. Environmental Studies course in the University of Delhi. Dr. Singh holds a Bachelor in Science degree in Botany (Hons.) from the University of Delhi. In addition, he has completed a number of add-on courses such as on Community based disaster management, Water management, Rain water harvesting implementation, Gender and Society among others.
